Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls

One of the advantages of working in DUMBO is sharing the neighborhood with Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls. This non-profit organization serves girls and young women through summer camps and after-school programs. Campers write songs, learn instruments, form bands and put on concerts, building confidence and sisterhood along the way. Tuition is sliding scale so every girl has the opportunity to rock out.

Rock-N-Roll Auction Invitation

Our invitation design, for Willie Mae's annual auction, drew inspiration from their vibrant, rockin' mission. Magenta and black compliment the elements of torn paper and distressed type. A custom photo illustration of the event's hilarious emcee, Mr. Murray Hill, swims in a sea of guitars and stars. The invitation works as a self-mailer; stickers seal the edges and display addresses. Each piece was printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper, made with wind power.

The RSVP card, which was wrapped inside the self-mailing invite, serves three functions: state Willie Mae's mission, provide an order form for tickets and invite supporters to make donations to Willie Mae.

Rock Camp for Girls T-shirt

The official 2009 Rock Camp T-shirt design fits with the Camp's DIY, hand-made spirit. Campers learn music history, so they recognize the "ancient artifact" represented in our hand drawn illustration — a cassette tape! WORKSHOP created a custom, spray-painted typeface by cutting a stencil, spray painting, and scanning the results. The best part of this project is that, without prompting, each camper cut, rolled, tied and manipulated her shirt to make it her own.
